Instead of a “Best of 2012” list of pop culture things, I thought I’d share this enormous list of a few friends’ “Best of All Time” movies, albums, TV shows and internet videos gleaned from a game we played a couple weeks ago.
Basically, imagine you can only watch five movies for the rest of your life (or TV shows, listen to albums, etc). When you want to watch a movie, you have to watch one of those five, or watch nothing at all. Go around the group, and each person goes through their list one movie at a time. Once someone says a movie, that movie is no longer an option for anyone else (for example, I said Die Hard first, and therefore no one else could pick Die Hard for their list).
What this creates is not necessarily “I Think These are the Best” list, but instead a list of movies you could watch over and over again for the end of time. Seven Samurai is a great movie, but I’m not giving it a spot on my lifetime list. You also don’t have a ton of time to think about it. Like, in hindsight, I’d probably switch out some items on my lists with other great movies/albums/shows/videos I’m thinking of now. But that’s not the game.
Anyway, I played this with a group of people who have very diverse tastes, and it yielded some awesome results. I like going through lists (like the AFI Top 100), and it’s even better with this list because it’s curated by friends whose opinions I respect. I’m going to try and get through all of the movies and albums in 2013, shouldn’t be too difficult.
In case you want to know all of my favorite things that matter in the world. Looking back I would like to replace The Facts of Life with Roseanne.
I want to try this
